Non-Kosher Events

If you’ve ever kept kosher, really kept kosher, you will know that travelling can be difficult, but traveling to someone’s non-kosher event can even be more trying. I have really been blessed in that my extended family has always been extremely accommodating to our “dietary” restrictions (i.e. our spiritual palette). It always warms my heart how out of the way they will go to accommodate us (even if we are salivating over their food). If we want to bring food, they are supportive. They are also very supportive to order kosher food for us. I know many families where this is a big problem, so I feel very fortunate.
So, the invitation comes. “Look”, my husband says, “We can request kosher food at this one. Lets go!” I am thinking “Oh no! Not the cellophane dinner!” Our food will come out triple wrapped in cellophane with 14 plastic utensils and an environmental travesty. Our table mates will ask, “Why is your salad better than ours?” My husband will then go into a lengthy discussion on the oral law, cooking a kid in its mother milk (our table mate does not own a goat and won’t relate to this explanation) and why we keep kosher. The poor man will be “trapped,” but will listen with a look of confusion, interest and awe all mixed up. My children will quietly slip away from the table to avoid any further embarrassment.
You know, I think for my next event, I’ll put a note on the invitation that says “All meals kosher. Traif food available upon request”.
