The Skirt of Shame Shop.....Sold Out
My daughter's school has a dress code that adheres to psuedo-orthodox halachic guidelines. This requires that girls wear skirts that are BELOW the knee. I have purchased the appropriate skirts for my daughter to find them unworn and replaced by skirts that may have fit her when she was 12. It appears to my daughter that her knee caps are much higher than the school sees them to be. You know those pictures that 4-year olds draw where the legs are coming out of their heads? Now put a skirt on those legs and that is about how she wears hers. We have warned her that if she meets up with consequences that she will need to deal with those on her own. On several occassions she has been sent to the office to don the "skirt of shame". This is a less-than-attractive skirt that falls to her ankles and needs to be pinned up at the waist to not fall down. Donning the skirt elicits SOS texting to me and her father to come rescue her or to not send her back to school. I smile. My husband beats his chest. Today she again infuriated her teacher ("Mom, she screamed at me!") and was forced to wear the skirt once again. It seems she thought that by wearing leggings, she could move her knee caps even further up her thigh. Not only that, but she informed us that "all 12 skirts" were out today, being worn by other "offenders." As she said it, "Mom, the skirt of shame shop was all sold out today." I am thinking that maybe wearing the "skirt of odor" might work, or maybe no skirt at all as a consequence. Or maybe, when there is an offense, having the parents come into school wearing a bikini and sit in class right next to our children. That might, just make the front page of the Yeshiva News. I think this is just the age where you push your limits and test your boundaries knowing that your parents or teachers will put their foot down. One thing for sure, I am convinced that the skirt of shame is not working except to provide a creative challenge to the girl's and staff. I'm thinking the school should start a fashion design class "Dress Code-NOT!".
