Sofer Situations
My husband is a sofer. He is not just any sofer, he is an outstanding sofer. He is meticulous, artistic and heartfelt. He almost never turns down an opportunity to fix a torah. He does not question the audience but takes the opportunity to educate them. On many occasions he gets called from Jews of "many flavors" (as he kindly puts it) to fix their "not-so-kosher" torahs or to purchase a new one. We are both always touched by the sincerity of those bringing their precious torahs into our homes. They are generally wrapped and handled with care. We are never too surprised and yet surprised enough by what comes into our home. This past week we were presented a torah wrapped in a purple sleeping bag with a pink flower on it. My husband treated that torah with the exact same intentions as he would one found buried under the temple in Jerusalem. He inspected it, corrected it and returned it to its owner wrapped in its purple bag with the pink flower. Because you see, it is what is inside that matters. This lesson we have learned and we learn each and every day. All in a days work.
