Thankful for The Kick In the Butt

I love reading what people are thankful for as it reminds all of us not to take things for granted. What we are thankful for often has a lot to do with our mindset. I too an grateful for life, family, food, water and even my job. But, rarely do you see anyone thankful for the things, events or people who aggravate them...for the kick in the butt. And, when you think about it, it is those events or people who really make us grow, or as the rabbi's say, provide us with a "tikkun" to work on.
In this weeks parsha, Joseph, gets thrown into a pit. Who would ever think that such an annoying sibling would survive and turn out to lead the Jewish people?
This past week 50 people were laid off from the company where I work. After the shock subsides, I wonder what they will do and how they will get by. I am wondering if at some point they will ever be thankful.
If we really step back and look at the misery in our lives, we will typically see a repeat pattern. So, we have to ask ourselves, why? Why is there a frequency of annyoing, disloyal, complaining, etc people in my life (other than PMS or menopause, which in an of themselves are good enough reasons:)? Why am I attracting these experiences and what do I need to do to change the pattern. I certainly do not have any answers as I am wondering these things myself, but I have a feeling that there is good reason and I am just not listening hard enough.
