1 Dog for 2 Rabbis
Last shabbos I was out of town. I arranged for my husband, daughter and twin boys to have their shabbos meals with friends. So, off I go to Indianapolis (home of one kosher bakery) with my provisions on hand, happy that my family was left to enjoy shabbos in the company of good friends. Not too far into my trip, I get a call from my husband explaining that he had decided to host two chassidic rabbis and was shipping my dog off to Camp Cuddle Care (aka: doggie overnight care). Since I was several hundred miles away, hearing the determination in his voice and my thoughts focused on the convention I was attending, I wished him well (and said a silent prayer for my daughter who would be put to the test with 2 rabbis in the house). It was only after I was going to bed Erev Shabbos, that I began to process that my little dog had been traded out for 2 rabbis. Seriously?? She was worth at least 10! She is super sweet, soft and cuddly and would never turn down the chesed (loving kindness) of welcoming a stranger into our home. I mean just look at her....how can anyone not fall in love?
Well, it seems as if the rabbis were a huge hit with my boys, while my husband managed to cook, prepare and clean up from 2 major shabbos meals (he is very capable no doubt); and my dog had a blast at Camp Cuddle Care. She is just now, however, coming out of her depression from being "traded". It will take some time, but a good dose of chicken soup and challah should set her straight. Maybe she's a reincarnated rabbi? If so, she must have really messed up last time as she keeps getting sent away when rabbis come around.
Meanwhile, this past week, my boys managed to convince me to purchase a fish and a bird. My husband cried. Ah divine retribution at its best.
